Reading and Writing Sahara, Places you would like to go/Using Descriptive Language to Describe Places

 By Nate Feldman

I would like to visit the Jersey Shore this summer.  There are many great places I would be interested in going there.  A great example of this is Ocean City, New Jersey.  It is famous as being a great place to take your family on a vacation.  There are the beaches, the boardwalk with many shops, and there are amusement parks.  Second, I want to spend some time in Atlantic City, a little to the north of Ocean City.  There are a lot of fun activities there.  For instance, you can see different shows and entertainment at many of the hotels and resorts.  Many people gamble there, but I don't.  Finally, I can go further north along the shore to Asbury Park.  This also has a nice boardwalk and beaches, and it's famous because the singer Bruce Springsteen is from there originally.

Descriptive Writing:

I would like to visit the Amazon rain forest because there are many different types of animals there.

I would love to explore New York City because it is full of interesting art and culture.

My brother and I are interested in visiting Russia because we want to learn more about Russian history.

My sister would like to travel to every continent because she loves to learn about different cultures.

My parents would like to go to Turkey one day because they want to explore the underground cities.

I would like to eat

I would love to eat

I want to eat

I would be interested in eating

A forest                                   green, large, dark

Hummus                                 lemony, tasty, savory

Table                                       smooth, cool, relaxing

Birds                                       chirping, soothing, singing

Flowers                                   sweet, fresh, strong

1.      I came to the dark forest with large, green trees everywhere.

I put some hummus on the bread and enjoyed its tasty, lemony, and savory taste.

I was tired in class, so I put my head down on cool, relaxing table with a smooth surface.

I opened the window, and I heard birds chirping and singing their soothing songs to wake up the world.

I walked outside and smelled the strong, fresh scent of sweet flowers everywhere.

In the stadium, we heard the loud guitar and the crashing of the drums with a beautiful harmony.

SSP Dubai, Goals

 By Nate Feldman

Class Objective: Discuss your weekend in groups, talk about long-term goals you have

My weekend

This weekend was a lot of fun.  On Friday evening, I went to Phoenixville, a town about an hour away from downtown Philadelphia.  There, I saw the 1979 movie Alien with a horror movie group I am a member of.  The movie was playing at the Colonial Theater, a classic cinema.

On Saturday morning, I went to Linwood Park in Ardmore, also a suburb of Philadelphia, but much closer than Phoenixville.  I am a member of a book club, and we gathered at the park to discuss a book we read, The Last Animal, a story about a woman who recreates a wooly mammoth.  Later in the day, I went running on the Struble Trail in Downingtown, another small town a bit away from the city.

On Sunday, I went hiking at French Creek State Park.  This is a place with a lake, woods, and places for camping.  The weather was spectacular, and I saw some great scenery.

Hopewell Lake at French Creek State Park

MRW

                                                            Master’s Reading and Writing

1. I was rummaging through my closet the other day for my old pair of football cleats.  It was the 10th anniversary of our team winning the state championship, and a group of the guys wanted to have a game of touch football to remember the good old days.  Under a pile of old notebooks were my cleats.  They still had dirt caked all over them and were a bit worn down, but when I put them on, I saw that they still fit perfectly.  Putting them on caused a rush of memories to return to my head.

2. The first thing that made our team great was our coach, Mr. Kenny Stuart.  No one in the school was feared more than him.  He coached with a ferocity that no one had ever done before at Westmore High. Every error committed on the practice field was examined in detail.  He berated us during practice and n games.  “My five year old hits harder than you!” he shouted.  He really rode us hard.  But although we complained while this was happening, we really appreciated it.  He made our team better than it ought to have been.

3. When I got to the reunion at the high school, I saw the faces of former teammates.  Many of them I hadn’t seen since graduation.  Although we hadn’t seen one another since winning the title, we were able to connect immediately because of the bond being a part of a team like this had created.  We were the only team at Westmore high that ever won a state title, so our team had an enduring legacy for the community.

Match the paragraph with the sentences that would best fit in them.

A. He scared the daylights out of us

B. Our team was the most significant one the high school had ever had

C. I hadn’t used them in a very long time

You are in a state of denial.  After getting into an altercation, my friend was in a bad state because the person assaulted them and hit them on the head.

I was in Clark Park the other day when I came across a person playing with their dog.

The word got out that you won’t be coming to class because you are travelling.

The word got out that there was a fight in morning class.

I had a great time at the restaurant.  The salad and main course were delicious.  And to top it off, I had a wonderful piece of cake for dessert.

I had a bad time at the restaurant.  The salad was old, and the main course tasted dry.  And to top it off, I found an insect in my food.

*Yuya, where are you?  Are you home yet?

*Yutske, good luck with your studies and career.  I hope your career will be a gold mine for you!

Crime and Punishment, Bad Stories in the News

 By Nate Feldman

As most of you are probably familiar with, the news is inundated about stories with war and crime.  Quite often, when I check the website of the local newspaper here in Philly, it's often about shootings are different bad things that have happened in Philly.  But, is this a good thing?  Should we as a society also focus more on positive things rather than negative?  Do you want the news to continue covering stories about crimes, or would you like to hear more about good things people do?  Do you think the show we just watched, Neighborhood Wars, would be as popular if instead of feuds, it focused more on neighbors doing virtuous things for one another?

inundated: to cover with a flood (in this context to be filled with something)

virtuous: morally excellet; righteous

First, discuss the questions above with members of the class.  Then, make a list of things you'd like to see the news and or programs focus more on.

MLS, Humanities Class Activity

*We will watch a video about how AI may potentially change Chinese classrooms and schools that are experimenting with it.  We will take notes and answer a list of questions using our notes about this topic.

Crime and Punishment, Class Activity

This week, we read about, discussed, and watched videos about people who are having feuds with their neighbors in some form or another for a variety of reasons.

In a group, you will make a list of advice you have for neighbors who are in the middle of some kind of feud with people living near them, either next door, or in the same area.  What is the best way to reduce and or avoid conflict?  Think of the stories you saw and read about and how you would help these people to limit their problems.

Try to make a nice list.  Feel free to add pictures and make the list nice, so that we can hang this up on the wall.  For instance, you draw a picture of people having an altercation or being involved with shenanigans, and put a big X around it.

Also, remember to use vocabulary we have learned in class.  For example,

*Try and find a good mediator

*Avoid altercations at all costs

*Stay away from shenanigans

MRW, Descriptive Essay, Model Essay

A Day at the Beach

For many people, a trip to the shore is the ideal vacation.  On a summer day, you will see large throngs of people gathered on the beach.  In some ways, it is tempting to say that going to the beach is one of those things that has been overdone, but when you actually arrive there, you realize why so many people do it.

As you exit your car, the first things you notice are the sounds and the smell.  There is the salty smell of the air coming from the sea.  If you go to a tourist beach, the smell of the sea is accompanied by the smell of food cooking on a boardwalk.  You can smell freshly cooked pizza coming out of the oven, French fries, and the sweet smell of powdered sugar on funnel cake.

When it comes to the sounds, there is the sounds of seagulls squawking overhead with the loud crashing of the waves to shore.  I have always found these sounds therapeutic.  Just listening to them puts me in a deep, relaxed trance.  If you are in a tourist place, these sounds are accompanied by the roar of large crowds.  Often, you can hear loud music blasting over a loud speaker somewhere.  Some people prefer to be alone at the beach, so they’d prefer a quieter location, but I actually find the sounds of the crowd to be comforting.  It’s nice to know you are around so many people.

Then, perhaps the loveliest thing there is what you see.  If the weather is nice, the sun shines off the surface of the water like a glowing diamond.  When there is a high tide, the choppy waves come roaring to the shore leaving a white foam at your feet.  But the thing I find most enchanting is staring into the distance towards the horizon.  The water goes on and on until it disappears at the edge of the sky.  If you are facing the east, you will see the sun rise over the ocean in the morning.  It comes up as a giant orange ball illuminating the area with its grandeur.

So, even though so many people go to the shore on vacation, and it seems unoriginal to do so, there are great reasons to do it.  The sounds, smell, and sights are the most soothing things you can imagine.  Thank you and enjoy the beach!

____________________, I'll be _______________________AI in classrooms.  First, _____________________China, where there are already schools using a form of it.  We saw a video where young children had to put a headband on that reads their brainwaves, so that the teacher, as well as the student's parents, can see if they are focused on it.  ___________________, if the student doesn't pay attention, people will know.  This will get students to focus more in class and enable teacher's to control the classroom.  Now, ______________________the future of teachers.  Will AI replace human teachers?  ___________________, will we be taught by robots someday.  For some this might work, but others feel AI lacks the ability to connect with humans like other humans.  So, it's hard to tell.  ______________________, AI may be the future in our classrooms, but it's unclear yet whether that is a good or bad thing.

Video: Love of education

*Do you feel that love and education must go together?  Is it the teacher’s job to produce and show love to the students?
