SEC Masters, Weekend Assignment with Inside Out 2

 By Nate Feldman

*Weekend Assignment:

Make a summary of the movie we watched (Inside Out 2).  Talk about the main ideas of the story and give me your review of it.  For example, did you like it?  Not like it?  Why or why not?  The review should be about 150 words.

*Yesterday, in the movie, we saw that anxiety is making Riley fear the future a lot with many possible bad scenarios.  In all of the scenarios, there are bad results for Riley if she does not succeed at hockey.  Then, Joy breaks into the room and tries to show the positive scenarios (i.e. they will win and be happy).

Because of this, she breaks into the coach’s office to read her private notebook, and she sees that the coach does not think she is ready yet for the team.  She broke into the office because the anxiety told her she had to see these things.

For discussion:

*Does your anxiety keep you awake at night?

*Does anxiety make you do bad things?

*Do you fear bad scenarios in your life?

SEC Master's, Inside Out 2 Summary and Discussion Questions

 By Nate Feldman

Inside Out 2 is about Riley, who has now turned 13 years old.  Her original emotions of joy, anger, fear, disgust, and sadness have control of her life.

She still loves hockey and is planning to go to a three-day hockey camp with her friends Bree and Grace.  But, she is now entering adolescence and is experiencing new emotions, ranging from anxiety and envy to embarrassment.

While heading to the camp, she learns that her two friends will not be attending high school with her.  Meanwhile, she wants to be accepted by the older high school girls, especially Val Ortiz, the captain of the hockey team and Riley's role model.

Anxiety decides to remove her original five emotions so that she can take control of Riley's decisions.  Riley, who is desperate to fit in, decides to abandon Bree and Grace in order for the older girls to like her more.  But, Joy wants to lead the others to help Riley return to the person she was before the big changes.

Questions:

1. As you have gotten older have you experienced more anxiety in your life?

2. Did you feel a big difference from being a young child to becoming an adolescent?

3. Did you ever try and be popular with a group of other people?  If so, did you abandon friends of yours when you tried this?

RW Taj Mahal

 By Nate Feldman

Maybe, it will help us in the future.

I came to ELS to learn English, but I didn’t learn enough.

My name is Nate, and I work at ELS as a teacher.  My students come from many countries around the world.  It is very interesting to help them learn English, and I also learn things from their language and culture, too.  One of them is Khaled Al-Ghamdi.  He laughs when I say, “Ayndak Kitab?”

Conversation and Vocabulary, Beginners, A Piece of Cake

Today, we had a quiz in Mr. Nate’s class.  It was a piece of cake!  Tomorrow, I have the final exam.   It will be a piece of cake!

Discussion:

*What is a piece of cake for you?

Example: Math is a piece of cake for me.  English is a piece of cake for Mr. Nate.  Listening on the final exam is a piece of cake for Tawfiq.  Typing on a computer in English is a piece of cake.  I can type very fast.  I can type very fast, so it is a piece of cake for me.  Thank you.  Thank you again.  Enjoy!  J

You stole my heart = you made me love you so much

RW, Taj Mahal

Mr. Nate is very generous with his students.  For example, when a student gets 13/14, it should be 93, but he gives the student 95.  So, that’s so nice of him J  Furthermore, when some students take a week to hand in the assignment, he still gives them some credit and not a zero (which some teachers might give them).  So, he is always giving people a second chance.

Reading and writing class is very interesting for me.  For instance, we learned about unique ways to memorize things.  Furthermore, we learned about how lightning is created in clouds.  We also talked about tornadoes and why they come.  Finally, we talked about William Kamkwamba  from Malawi, who invented his own wind mill for his village.

My teacher is so lazy.  For instance, he sleeps during the lesson.

It’s easier to play MLS than to play in European leagues.  For example, when Messi plays here, it’s easier to score a goal because the defense and goalkeepers aren’t as good.

Conversation and Vocabulary, Beginners

 By Nate Feldman

Yesterday, we had class in the other room because it was so cold in here.  There was snow in the morning, but there was no delay.  We came at normal time.  But, now we know tomorrow there is no school because of the parade.  When your team wins the championship in the USA, the city has a parade.  It is freezing in here!  We talked about our country’s capitals.  After class, I went home.  I went to the park.  I went to the gym because it was raining outside.  I ran on the treadmill in the gym.  I also lifted some weights.  Then, I went home and had dinner.  I had rice, vegetables, and garbanzo beans.  Then, I fell asleep because I was so tired.  I fell asleep on the ground at 9:30. Then, I went into the bed and fell asleep there.

For discussion:

*Where is it freezing?

*What do you like to do outside?

*Do you have parades for sports in your country?  If not, when do you have parades?  What do people do at parades?

*When did you fall asleep last night?

You have a four-day holiday!

Example:

On Friday, I went to the Eagles’ parade.  I went with Nawaf.  We saw our friends in Center City.  We danced with our friends.  We celebrated the Eagles championship.

On Friday, I slept at home.  I talked with my family in Saudi Arabia.  I ate kabsa with my friends.  I watched a movie on Netflix.  I went to the gym.  I ran on the treadmill.  I smoked hookah.  On Saturday, I went to ……….I saw……..

MLS Environmental Engineering, Summarizing

 By Nate Feldman

Can anyone summarize the issues dealing with air quality and indoor air pollution and the dangers of exposure to indoor air pollutants?

*According to the article, indoor air pollution is just as dangerous as being exposed to air pollution outside.  This is because outside the pollutants are dispersed by the wind, but indoors they are suspended in the air, and we are all breathing the same air.  This causes major health problems, such as headaches, stuffy nose, and even ailments, such as cancer.

*According to the article in the Philadelphia Inquirer, today we are going to get the biggest snowfall of the year so far.  The article mentioned that because of this snow, they decided to have the Super Bowl parade in Philly on Friday instead of today or Wednesday.  One key idea of the reading is that there will be more snow if you live south of the city.  It also pointed out that because it is falling during the late afternoon, it will affect people going home from work and other places.  The article talked about the time the snow will begin.  It will begin earlier if you are south of the city.  The article also covered how much snow has fallen in Philly this year until now.

Conversation and Vocabulary, Eagles Super Bowl Celebration

 By Nate Feldman

You are a clown = you are a silly person

You are a baby = your behavior is like a baby

*You have silly behavior.  Last night, in Philly, some of the people had silly behavior because they jump on signs.  This is silly behavior.

Brunch: breakfast and lunch together.

Yesterday, I woke up, and I had a small breakfast.  Then, I went running at the track.  At 11:30, I went to a restaurant with my friend.  We had brunch.  After brunch, I went to the park.  Then, I prepared for my classes.  In the evening, I drove to my father’s house.  We watched the Super Bowl together.  We ate pizza and Stromboli and salad. The Eagles won the game.  Everyone in Philadelphia was so happy!  They ran into the streets and they celebrated.  The streets were very crowded.

*Did you celebrate last night?  If no, when did you celebrate?

*Where are streets crowded?

*Did you eat brunch before?  What did you eat?

MLS Environmental Engineering, Class Notes

 By Nate Feldman

*If you have exposure to chemical gases, it can be harmful to your health.

Exposure = you encounter or experience something

*Here at ELS, I have a lot of exposure to other cultures.

*If you have too much exposure to the sun, it can damage your skin, but you need some exposure because it gives you Vitamin D.

Disperse = to move away or leave something

*After class ends at 3:45, the students disperse and leave the building.

Suspended in something = hanging or floating

Ailment = illness or sickness

*Some students had to miss class because they had an ailment.

Second-hand smoke: exposure to someone else smoking

Contaminant: something that makes something else dirty

*Don’t drink the water.  It has contaminants.  It is contaminated.

Monitor: to watch carefully

*During the exam, the teacher monitors us to make sure we don’t cheat and do the exam correctly

Pesticide: chemical used to kill insects, especially on plants or food

Air pollutants: things that make the air dirty

Air Pollution is just as big a deal indoors as it is outdoors because rather than get dispersed over a wider area

Discussion Question:

*How do you feel about indoor air pollution?  Do you see it as a concern, or is it something you haven’t really thought about?

*In the buildings you live/work in, what kind of pollutants might you be exposed to?

Summary: The students discussed the harmful effects of indoor air pollution and some of the pollutants that cause it.  The girl mentioned that we often focus on air pollution outdoors, but we often overlook indoor air pollution even when it is harmful.  She even said she wanted to open the window after reading this information, and the class thought that was funny.  The boy discussed specific pollutants, such as second-hand smoke, radon, and the effects of household items, such as floor cleaners, detergents, and pesticides.

Even though reports have shown a decrease in gun violence in Philadelphia, the issue is still a major concern for the city.  In the early 2020s, over 2000 people were shot a year in Philly.  That number decreased by 37% in 2024, but there were still over 1,000 people shot.  So, based on this research, it’s still a big issue here.

After work, I went to the supermarket and bought milk.  Then, I went to the park.  After that, I relaxed.  Later, I went to the gym and ran on the treadmill and lifted weights on some machines.  Then, for dinner, I had soup and vegetables.  It was a nice day.

1. Who is someone who tried to get the best of you?

2. What caused you misery?

3. Would you like to stay forever young?

4. What makes you feel numb?

When I was stuck at the airport for ten hours, I felt misery.

I went outside when it was so cold, and now my hands are numb.

I’d like to find a magic potion to make me stay forever young.

The teacher told me my English was bad, so this damaged my psyche.

 OR write a story

Once, there was a ruthless teacher.  He told all the students they were ugly.  This caused a lot of misery in class and damaged their psyches.  The teacher was numb inside and lacked empathy for others….
