Crime and Punishment, Bad Stories in the News

 By Nate Feldman

As most of you are probably familiar with, the news is inundated about stories with war and crime.  Quite often, when I check the website of the local newspaper here in Philly, it's often about shootings are different bad things that have happened in Philly.  But, is this a good thing?  Should we as a society also focus more on positive things rather than negative?  Do you want the news to continue covering stories about crimes, or would you like to hear more about good things people do?  Do you think the show we just watched, Neighborhood Wars, would be as popular if instead of feuds, it focused more on neighbors doing virtuous things for one another?

inundated: to cover with a flood (in this context to be filled with something)

virtuous: morally excellet; righteous

First, discuss the questions above with members of the class.  Then, make a list of things you'd like to see the news and or programs focus more on.
