Lesson Plan: Responding to bad news/using will/be going to for future plans and predictions  

Responding to Bad News:

Example 1:

John: I failed my exam!  I'm so upset!

Dana: Oh no!  That's terrible!  I'm so sorry to hear that!  

Example 2:

Billy: I just got attaked by a monster in the woods! 

Kenyatta: I'm so sorry to hear that!  What can I do to help you?!


Plans for the future will will/be going to 

1. Plans you already made (going to):

I am going to travel                             We are going to travel

You are going to travel                       They are going to travel

He/She/It is going to travel

*This weekend, I am going to travel to NYC

 2. Predictions (going to and will):

*I have a match this weekend.  I think we will win.  I have a match this weekend.  I think we are going to win.

 3. Promise (will):

*I can’t help you now, but I will help you later.


4. Negative forms of be going to:  

I’m not going to study at ELS next year

You’re not going to be here on Saturday

He isn’t/She isn’t/It isn’t going to….

We aren’t going to….

They aren’t going to….

5. Questions with will/be going to

 Are you going to come with me this weekend?

Will you help me later today?

I am going to go to NYC this weekend.  Are you going to come with me? 

 6. Introduction about myself with will/be going to 

Hi, my name is Nate.  This summer, I am going to travel to the beach and spend time there.  I think I am going to have a great time there.  I will buy you a souvenir if you want anything.
