I am starting the ELS Students Movement. We will fight
for justice and equality for students here. And we will fight for fair treatment by the authorities.

Should
ELS Have Longer School Days?
ELS is a language
center that offers classes to international students. A typical day at ELS for intensive students
takes place from 8:30 AM until 3:45 PM.
Although this seems like more than enough time for people to improve
their language skills, some people are arguing that we should have longer days
and study until 5:30 PM. However, is this a good idea?
Should we really study for nine hours daily? In my opinion, we should make students study until 5:30 (Thesis
Statement).
The first reason we
should have longer school days is because the student’s English will get so
much better. If you make someone stay in
class for nine hours, their language skills will improve dramatically. It will make them think and interact in
English for most of their day. Students
came here to improve English, not to have fun, so we will make their English
better.
Another reason we
should have longer school days is that the students don’t do useful things
outside of the class. For example, many
students return to their rooms and play video games or chat with their families
in their native language. They are
forgetting the whole reason they came to the USA in the first place: to learn
English! If you want to get good at
English, you have to speak it almost all of the time.
Some people say that if we stay in class all day, we will be so
tired and can’t focus in the class. It is true that some students will be tired if we are in class
longer. However,
if the schedule is too hard for them, then maybe they should not be in an
intensive language program. There is a
reason it is called intensive. It’s a
lot of work and time. To be the best,
you must train like the best. A longer
day trains you to be the best.
