Master's Reading and Writing, What is Shame?

                                                                       What is Shame?

All of us at one time or another probably had a parent, teacher, or older person say, “Shame on you,” for something inappropriate they felt we did.  It’s also quite common to hear people say things like, “I am ashamed of myself for what I have done,” or “You should be ashamed in yourself.”  We throw this term around quite a bit, but it is not exactly clear what we mean by shame because we use it in different contexts.

Shame is often a low feeling someone has about themselves for something bad they have done.  For example, if you stole something or caused harm to someone else, you feel shame because you know it was wrong, and now you must live with that feeling for the rest of their life.  Some people might say this feeling is guilt.  I’d say you feel guilt for the action, but you feel shame about yourself.  So, shame is the low image in your mind that you have.

Now, another use of shame is the verb to shame someone, which is to make this person look bad in the public’s eyes.  For example, if you make a person who committed a crime stand out in public with a large sign that says, “I am a criminal,” then they call this a public shaming.  In this context, shame means to make someone’s image look bad to others and to damage their reputation, sometimes beyond repair.

Shame is often used in the expression, “Isn’t that a shame?”  For example, you can say, “Isn’t a shame John couldn’t be here at the party tonight.  He would have such a good time!”  By this we mean isn’t it disappointing.

Shame does not necessarily refer to doing a bad thing.  For example, some people might say that they are ashamed of themselves if they didn’t get the best score in class, or if their team doesn’t win a lot of games in a particular sport.  But, just because these things aren’t great, it doesn’t mean they are shameful necessary, especially if it is not that person’s fault.

So, shame has different meanings depending on how use it.  All in all, it has a negative connotation, and it definitely refers to a feeling of being unworthy or below others, either for something you have done or for who or what you are.  Regardless of it’s meaning, it’s a feeling we should avoid at all costs.

Discussion:

*What is the most shameful thing you have done (if you are comfortable talking about it)?  Or if not the most shameful thing, what is a shameful thing you have done?  Why would you refer to it as shameful?

*If someone says, “you are shameful,” what do they mean by this?

*What does it mean to be shameless?

Kevin: Are you sure?  I mean, I have a job.  Perhaps you are being too impatient.

Ashley: Kev, you have your job because your dad hooked you up.  I've been all over the place trying to connect with the right people.....it's too difficult here.  It's been almost a year.  That's enough time, don't you think?

Kevin: Perhaps.  But, well, I can see if I can find anything.  I'd hate to see you lose away.  The thought is too depressing to even imagine!

Master's Reading and Writing, A Frightened Pedestrian

By Nate Feldman

                                                                                1

Mr. Vampeer the vampire worked for the Ghost and Goblin Gazette, a newspaper focusing on Monster affairs in the community.  He was doing a report on human areas of the town of Doomsday where housing was often denied to monsters seeking homes.

Mr. Vampeer was from a family of domesticated vampires that had many generations ago stopped the habit of drinking blood from people's necks and had learned to find their nutrients from cooked meat and other conventional ways.  Nevertheless, he still had the purplish-pale skin of a vampire with sharp fangs that showed clearly when he laughed.

One evening, he was heading to the neighborhood he was doing a report on to interview local landlords about whether they would permit monsters to be their tenants or not, when he noticed a woman several feet in front of him looking back nervously.  She glanced back in his direction every ten seconds or so it seemed.

Mr. Vampeer, keenly aware of how his presence might unnerve some people, began whistling some classical musical tunes to show he meant no harm.  But, this didn't stop the woman from looking back and begin picking up her pace.  He could see that she was visibly trembling.  Mr. Vampeer kept whistling.

The woman all of a sudden began running.  Mr. Vampeer stood still and watched as she sprinted away.  Even as she got further from him, she continued looking back, making sure he wasn't pursuing her.

                                                                                2

Mr. Vampeer continued walking as if nothing was happening.  The woman disappeared in the distance.  All of a sudden, a posse of men appeared.  Mr. Vampeer froze as they approached him.  Some of them were carrying chains.  Others had stakes.  "What are you doing in these parts?" one of the men asked him.

"I'm a reporter for The Ghost and Goblin Gazette," he told the group, feeling taut inside.  "I'm interviewing some local landlords."

"I see," said one of the men.  "You sure you're not here to drink some people's blood?"

Mr. Vampeer was familiar with these kinds of comments, so he didn't let it upset him too much, but standing next to a group of men brandishing weapons made him feel very uneasy.

"I'm just here for my job," he replied as calmly as possible.

"Well," said one of the other men.  "It's probably best if you make your way out of here.  We don't want any trouble around these parts."

Mr. Vampeer had a deadline to meet for his newspaper, so he was uneasy about not getting the interview done.  But, at the same time, he wasn't sure if it would be even possible given the circumstances around him.

Master's Reading and Writing, "Vanished in the Woods," a Horror Story

 By Nate Feldman

Bill and Ghuzzel entered the old cabin in the woods late at night.  It was their night off from counseling duties at Camp Doomsday and they wanted to spend time together.  They had been having a relationship for the past few weeks, but no one at the camp, except for perhaps Josh the camp director, had any idea about it.

The cabin was located a couple of miles away from camp.  Ghuzzel was familiar with it and thought that it was a good place to get away and not be detected by anyone else.

"What is this place?" Bill wanted to know.

"I guess it's used for camping out," Ghuzzel replied.

"It seems a bit isolated," Bill said looking around.

The inside of the cabin was completely dark, and there was no light switch of any kind.  The light on their phones was all they had to dimly illuminate the room.

The two embraced one another and kissed.

"How would your family feel if they knew we were together?" Bill asked, looking in Ghuzzel's face.

"Well, first they'd kill me," she said matter of factly.  "And then they'd kill you."

Bill made a forlorn expression on his face.  He knew he liked her, but he couldn't see how their relationship could last.  But, he didn't want this to ruin the evening.  They kissed again.

All of a sudden, there was a rustling sound outside.  It sounded like footsteps.  Ghuzzel and Bill looked outside the window.  It was too dark to see anything.

They turned away from the window, but they heard the movement outside again.  Unbeknownst to them, there was a menacing presence in their midst.  It was filled with hate and rage and wanted to take its anger out on the unsuspecting couple.

Ghuzzel and Bill opened the door to see who or what was outside.  At first there was nothing, but all of a sudden they were attacked by the menacing presence.  There were loud screams and shouts, and then there was silence.

When people arrived the next morning looking for Bill and Ghuzzel, all people could find were their belongings, completely mauled to shreds.  There was blood splashed everywhere on the outside of the cabin.

Kevin: Yeah, me too.  But, this weekend I really want to hang out.  Do you have some free time?

Master's Reading and Writing, "Why do we Crave Horror Movies?"

 By Nate Feldman

Why do People like Horror Movies?

Horror movies are designed to shock and terrify us with images of humans being menaced and tortured by some monster or killer.  The interesting thing is that many “normal” people enjoy watching this.  There is a reason that horror films earn millions of dollars at the box office when they are released.  It also explains why they have so many sequels.  But, why do people crave these films so much?  What attracts them to these stories?  I think people like them because they are an escape from reality and because we all have a little craziness inside of us.

Our lives are filled with enough difficulties, and I think people enjoy horror films to enter another world.  The thing about horror movies is that they are so obviously fake.  I mean, the idea of a man coming into your dreams and killing you like Freddy Krueger is obviously not from the real world, so while we watch these films, we enter into these fantasy worlds if only for a short time.

Another reason we like these films is because we have a crazy side inside of all of us.  Stephen King in the essay in class referred to it as alligators in our brains that need to be fed.  I see some truth in this.  Instead of doing crazy and horrible things, we can be entertained by people doing this in fake stories.  Like I said in the paragraph above, horror movies are fantasies.  I think we all know that what we are watching is not real, so we don’t feel guilty for seeing the horrible things.  Still, we are crazy enough to imagine such horrible things as being fun to watch.

In conclusion, horror movies have been with us for a long time and will continue to be so long into the future.  Their fun stories and chance for us to feed our own craziness will keep them popular for the foreseeable future.  So, go see a horror movie tonight and have some fun!   Thank you.
