Master's Language Skills, Day 8

 By Nate Feldman

What does she expect in the future?

*She expects more solar chimneys and wind turbines to be utilized in different facilities

What are the environmental problems caused by?

*Urban heat island and automobile emissions

What is the main idea of the upcoming unit?

A.      Air quality in American cities

B.             Ways to reduce carbon emissions

C.            Air quality indoors

The loud noise from the people across the hall is adversely affecting my studies.  I can’t concentrate.

Your abusive language is adversely affecting my self-esteem.

*Describe the indoor air quality in your dormitory/home?  Is it good?  Is it adversely affecting your health?

*What are things that have had adverse effects on you?

*Where can you find large concentrations of people?

>>American sweets are over the top with sugar.

According to the Center of Indoor Air Quality, 75% of American homes have poor circulation.

The main idea of my research is to discuss the poor air quality in buildings in Philadelphia.

Recent meetings at City Hall are focusing on the need to fix buildings in a way that will make breathing in them easier.

Implied: It’s not easy to breath in buildings in the city

Yesterday, John argued with his parents about his school performance.  When that was over, he and his roommate fought about who would use the kitchen.  In class, he told the professor that his teaching style was not professional enough.  On the way home, he saw another driver and gave them the finger because he thought they cut him off.

Implied: John is angry

I want to go green, so I am going to add a solar panel, wind turbines, a biomass boiler, photovoltaic cladding….

>>OK OK, aren’t we going a bit over the top?  We don’t need all of those things!

>>The students are hard-wired to focus in their class when the teacher enters the room.

>>Athletes are hard-wired to get intense before a match.

>>When he/she enters the gym, they are hard-wired to do intense exercises.

There are many reasons to believe that indoor air quality in Philadelphia housing is not acceptable.  The Center for Indoor Air Quality has stated that 75% of homes have somewhat to very unbreathable air.  In other research, analysts with the Healthy Homes organization stated that 60% of homeowners in the Philadelphia area complain of respiratory issues.

From the years 2003-2016, there was a slight decrease in deaths from firearms in Philadelphia.  Statistics on the Philadelphia government’s website showed that in 2003 it was about 300 people a year killed by firearms, whereas in 2016 it was 275.  However, there have been periods where it was higher or lower according to the same statistics.
