What is Friendship?
: A Definition Essay
There are many things in life that
are essential for our well-being. These
things, which can come in any order, include job security, financial
well-being, and safety. Another thing
that is often necessary for our quality of life is having friendship. This is something that people are often
searching for, but what exactly do we mean by this?
According to the dictionary,
friendship is a relationship where there is trust and intimacy, or closeness,
between two individuals. That definition
has some problems, however. You can have
trust and closeness with many people without having a true friendship with
them. For example, we have closeness and
trust between teachers and students.
But, are teachers really the same as friends. Some teachers say they are friends, but there
is a difference. The teachers closeness
and trust is part of a professional commitment.
Friendship, however, is not only a profession. It is also a close bond we have with another
person.
Some people
would say that friendship are the people you like. If you like someone, and they like you too,
then you are friends. But, is that
accurate? We like some people at work, or
we like some classmates, but they aren’t necessarily friends. We like our relatives, but we don’t really
call them friends either. We like and
admire other people in our lives, such as teachers, or the nice waiter at the
restaurant who has a good conversation with you. But, they are not necessarily our friends.
Friendship refers
to people who you like and trust, and they like and trust you, and your relationship goes beyond the
normal boundaries of a typical relationship. Whatever your culture’s rules for having a
relationship with someone is, you do more for that person than you do for other
people. And they do more for you than
for others. That is a true friendship.
