Should
We Have Classes Until 5 PM?
By Nate Feldman
The
ELS language school in Philadelphia offers classes in English from 8:30 in the
morning until 3:45 in the afternoon.
Recently, there has been talk by some people that ELS classes should be
much longer, and they have suggested that the day is extended until 5 PM
(Background).
However, is this a good idea?
Should we really have classes an hour and fifteen minutes more than we
do now? In my opinion, we should keep
the time as it is (Opinion).
The first reason we should keep the same time is
because ELS days are already pretty long to begin with. Students take six and a half hours of
classes, which is much longer than many other programs. If you add more time, it will just overwhelm
the students and make them hate the program more.
Another reason students shouldn’t stay too much longer
is because it will waste their time in the USA.
Of course, they came to learn English, but they also came to do other
things, such as see new places and meet new people. Exploring the USA and making friends is just
as important as being in class, and if students are in the class all day, they
won’t see much of the country.
Some people say that if you have longer days at
school, you will gain more knowledge. It
is true that you will take more classes and thus learn things you wouldn’t if
you went home earlier. However, there is
also a chance that you will learn nothing because your brain will be too tired.
So, the bodies will be there, but the
mind won’t, and you will learn nothing.
To conclude, ELS school days are long enough, so I don’t
think longer days are necessary. It will
make students too tired, and they will learn nothing anyway. So, keep the days as they are. Thank you.
Goodbye.
