Explicit vs. Implied meanings
*something explicit is something directly stated. For example, if I say, "I don't like that restaurant," I am explicitly saying I don't like it. If someone asks me about the restaurant, and I say, "well, I've heard the prices are too much and the food could be better," I am implying I don't like the place.
*We will listen to the audio passage on monopolies vs. competition and identify what the speaker says explicitly and what he implies.
*Make your own mini-presentation on monopolies. Come up with a list of questions for the class. Ask if the opinion is said explicitly or implied.
Example:
Monopolies are when a particular business in an
industry faces no competition in a specific marketplace. Take for example some petroleum companies in
some countries. There are no other
businesses challenging them for that service.
They dominate that market. Now, is that the best way to run an
economy? There are many people who
believe that competition encourages better service by different businesses
throughout the world. Why is that? It’s because when there is competition, it
motivates businesses to try to be the best at what they do. Without it, they become complacent. They don’t feel they have to improve the
quality of their business because they control every part of it whether they
are good or not. While that is probably
true in most circumstances, it’s unfortunate.
Ideally, people would give good service because they like the field they
are in and what to offer something good to people.
