Reading Explorer 2, P.58

 *We will review vocabulary on P.58, and then we will begin discussing Kung Fu on P.59.  

*Weekend assignment: Write a story about a tradition you have.  I will give an example in class.

*I have a tradition with my family.  We all gather on Thanksgiving for a big family meal.  Typically, on this day, families throughout the United States gather for a big feast.  We are supposed to be thankful of the different things in our lives. 

For me, personally, on this day I have different things I like to do.  I like to start the day with a race in the morning.  There are many 5K races that happen on Thanksgiving.  People call them “Turkey Trots.”  Maybe, you are jealous because my day is better than yours!

 

1.                  They live in light tents. 

2.                  A special place is always reserved for the guests. 

3.                  In the geerewol ceremony

4.                  Wodaabe men wrap their heads in attractive turbans, and wear beads and shells that symbolize wealth.

5.                  Thousands of wodaabe families reunite once again.

6.                  They celebrate all the weddings that have taken place in the last year.

 

1.                  If someone is jealous of another person, they want something the other person has.

2.                  If something is reserved, it is kept for a particular purpose.

3.                  When people reunite, they meet again after being separated. 

4.                  A ceremony is a special event, such as a wedding.

5.                  When you demonstrate something, you make it clear to other people.

6.                  If you approve of something, you think it is good.

 

A temple = a place of worship for some religions and traditions

Monks = devote their whole to religion

A master of (something) = a person who is the best at something

*I’m a master of English.  I’m a master of cooking.

Martial art = fighting styles (taekwondo, karate, kung fu, judo, jiu jitsu)

Acrobatics = people flying around

 

1.                  A monk is a member of a male religious community

2.                  Acrobatics are skilled, athletic body movements such as jumping, spinning, rolling, etc.

3.                  A temple is a building for the practice of a religion

4.                  If you are a master of something, you know how to do it very, very well

5.                  A martial art is a formal style of hand-to-hand fighting, also often practiced as a sport
