*Today, I will return the first reading quiz we took last week. Tomorrow, we will do the second reading quiz on Unit 3 (The Human Age). '
*We will go over the passive voice on P.82, and read and watch the video (P.83-84)
Passive Voice:
*English is taught at the ELS language center in Philadelphia.
*English is spoken throughout the world.
*Mr. Nate teaches this class. This class is taught by Mr. Nate.
*Grammar form: The passive voice shows the object of an action as the subject. In an active sentence, the subject is first.
For example, I play soccer with my friends. This is active. In a passive sentence, soccer is played.
*Make sure to use the verb "to be" in whatever verb-tense you are using, and use the third form of the verb, also known as "the past participle."
Exercise. Use the verbs in parentheses in the passive voice. Remember to use the correct verb-tense.
1. The essay (write) ______________________by the teacher last week.
2. My class (teach) _______________________by Mr. Nate this month.
3. Spanish (speak) _______________________throughout Latin America.
4. Chocolate (eat) _______________________by people in many cultures for dessert.
5. My things (take) _____________________from someone last week, and I haven't found them yet.
*I work at the ELS language center, a place where
English is taught to international students.
I work here because I enjoy meeting people. I taught things, but a lot is learned as well
here. I have learned about many cultures
and how things are done in other places.
I try to explain things carefully to students, because things must be
explained clearly or else they won’t understand what I am talking about.
Diagnose = a doctor tells you what disease or sickness
you have
*I went to the doctor, and I was diagnosed with lung
cancer.
*I gave some blood, and they are processing it (they
are analyzing what is in my blood)
*monitor = watch carefully
*Why are the inventions, like the one you saw in the
video, needed?
*We still have many diseases, such as malaria, and not
everyone in the world has access to high-tech medical facilities. For that reason, something as simple as a
cell phone, even a basic one, doing medical diagnostic tests will help people
in developing countries get treatment faster.
