Communicative Grammar, Class 1, Unreal Conditionals

 By Nate Feldman

*Unreal conditional in the present:

If I were from Japan, I would speak Japanese.

If I had a million dollars, I would share it with you.

If I ate breakfast more often, I wouldn't be hungry.

*Unreal conditionals in the past:

If I had studied more in high school, I would have gotten better scores

If I had slept more last night, I would have woken up earlier

Discussion:

*What is something you didn't do in your life in the past?  How would your life have been different if you had done it?

Grammar practice.  Using past unreal conditionals.

1. I didn't study for the last exam.  If I (study) _____________________, I (get) ___________________a better score I am certain.

2. I didn't eat dinner last night.  If I (eat) ____________________dinner, I (not be) ______________________so hungry this morning.

3. I studied hard for the exam. If I (not study) ___________________I am sure I (not get) ________________________the high scores that I did.

4. I crashed the car while driving in a bad snowstorm.  If I (stay) __________________at home like I was supposed to, then I (not got) ________________________into that accident.

5. I traveled last year.  If I (stay) ______________________home like I thought I might, I (miss) _______________________an amazing experience.
