SSP Rio de Janeiro, Passive Voice

 By Nate Feldman

Situation: John is talking to his wife Mary about his missing dinner.

John: Mary, you said you cooked dinner for me.  Where is it?

Mary: I put it on the kitchen table.

John: Well, I looked there, and I couldn't find anything.

Mary: Really!!??  I bet it was eaten by one of the kids.

John: Great!  Now, I'll have to make my own dinner!

Mary: I'm so sorry!

Question: What happened to John's dinner?

Grammar Note: Passive Voice means when an action happens to an object.  For example, I eat oatmeal everyday is the active way of describing something.  However, you can also say Oatmeal is eaten everyday.

In the passive voice, use the object + the verb "to be" + the past participle of a verb (or verb 3)

Examples:

English is spoken in the United States

Cheesesteaks are made and eaten in Philadelphia

English as a Second Language is taught at the ELS languauge center

Football is played in the United States.

For discussion:

*What popular food is eaten in your country?

*What sports are played in your country?

*What things are made in your country?
