If I had
studied more when I was in high school, I would have gone to a better university.
Question: Did I study more when I was in high school?
NO!
Question: Did I go to a better university?
NO!
If I’d had more time yesterday, I would have done more
work, but I was so busy.
I didn’t sleep enough last night, so I am very
exhausted. However, if I had slept more, I would have felt more energy today!
I am in class now.
If I hadn’t come to
class, I wouldn’t have taught
you today.
Did I come to class?
YES!
Did I teach you today?
YES!
Nate: Here is your new watch Rumi.
Rumi: Oh, well, I already have one.
Nate: REALLY?
You didn’t tell me! If I had
known that, I wouldn’t have bought this for you!
Rumi: Sorry!
I could have done my assignment yesterday, but I chose
not to.
I should have eaten a better breakfast, but I did
not.
I shouldn’t have eaten that bad food, because now my
stomach hurts. If I had eaten better
food, I would have felt better today.
I might have helped you if you had asked me earlier,
but you didn’t, so I didn’t help you.
If + subject + had + verb 3, the subject + would +
have + verb 3
I have money
If I’d had money yesterday, I would have bought the
nice shirt at the mall.
If I had come earlier, I would have studied and
prepared more for the lesson.
You might’ve done well if you’d studied more.
1. What is something you should have done? How would your life have been different if
you had done it?
2. What
is something if you hadn’t done it, your life would have been different?
Ex. If I hadn’t become an ESL
teacher, I wouldn’t have met any of you.
3. How
would the USA have been different if Lincoln hadn’t been President?
4. How
would Riley have been different if anxiety hadn’t taken control of her?
