MLS Environmental Engineering, Vocabulary + Eiffel Tower Discussion

 By Nate Feldman

Initiative: a planned action with a set goal.

*There are initiatives to reduce carbon emissions by 50% over the next 25 years.

Landmark: famous location in a country.

*The Liberty Bell is an iconic landmark in Philadelphia.

Amenity: added things to a place you stay at (I.e. at a hotel swimming pool, gym, laundry room etc.)

Complement: adding something to make something else better or more perfect

*I am taking classes at ELS, but I do private lessons on weekends to complement this so that I can become more fluent quickly.

Optimize: to make the best possible

*I hope you optimize your time in Philly as much as possible.  Besides taking classes, meeting new friends here is a great way to optimize your experience in the USA.

Don’t judge a book by its over: don’t assume what another person or place is without knowing them

Discussion Questions:

1.   What are buildings/places that you think need to be retrofitted?

Ex. Alumni classes need to be retrofitted with windows so I can see outside.

2.   What are iconic landmarks that you would like to visit?

3.   If you are at a hotel, or in an apartment, what kind of amenities do you like the place to have?

4.   What are ways you could complement your lessons at ELS?

5.   Do you judge books by their covers?  In other words, when you see people or places, do you assume things about them, or do you get to know them before you judge them?

6.   What kind of initiative would you like to come up with/make?
