SSP Moscow, Vocabulary and Grammar

Today, I’d like to talk to you about public transportation in Philly.  I’ll begin by telling you about the different forms of transportation we have here.  First, we have the buses.  We also have trains that go from different parts of Philly to other parts of the Philadelphia metropolitan region.

 

Today, I’d like to talk to you about gun violence in America.  I’ll begin by giving you statistics.  Then, I’ll list the ways we can solve this problem.  

 

Vocabulary:

*unaffordable = too expensive

*unemployment = people without jobs

*pollution = making things dirty

 

I’m very happy.  I’m too happy = you should be more sad. 

I got into Harvard because I am very smart. 

 

Today is 50 degrees outside.  Should we go out?

*No, it’s too hot!!!!!

Today is -10 degrees outside.  Should we go out?

*No, it’s too cold!!!!

Do you like to drink caramel latte frappucino? 

*No, it’s too sweet!!!!

Do you like Orange Chicken?

*No, it’s too sweet!!!!

Do you like to eat a lot of hot peppers?

*No, it’s too spicy!!!!

 

Is this food hot enough for you?

*Yes, it’s hot enough.  No, it’s not hot enough.

Are you smart enough to go to Harvard?

*Yes, I’m smart enough to go to Harvard.  No, I’m not smart enough to go to Harvard. 

Are you good enough in English to talk with native speakers?

*Yes, I’m good enough. 

 

There’s too much sugar in our food. 

There’s too much water.   There’s too little water in the desert.

There’s too much salt in my food.

 

We have 40 students in this room.  There are too many students.  We have only 3 students in the class, so there are too few students.

 

Questions for Discussion:

*What is there too much of in your life?

*What are there too many of in your life?

*What are you good enough to do?  What aren’t you good enough to do?

 

Sprawl = cities becoming bigger and taking up more land

Development = building houses and buildings

Rely on = you need this person or thing

*I rely on my family for money

 

 

I’ll wait and see = I’ll do it maybe

I’ve put down roots = I started raising my family here

Change of scenery = I’m tired of the same thing, I want to see something new

 

 

Present Real and Future Real

*If it rains, I bring an umbrella (every time it rains, I bring an umbrella)

*If I am tired, I go to sleep (every time I am tired, I go to sleep)

*If I am hungry, I cook something (every time I am hungry, I cook something)

*If it rains tomorrow, we will stay inside

*If I am hungry later today, I’ll cook something (a future plan and result)

 

Why are you so angry at me?

I’m not angry at you!

Oh, really!  If I see you, you walk away from me! 

 

I’m so scared.  I failed the test, and I don’t want my father to know!

Why not?

If he knows I failed, he will punish me!
