SSP Moscow, Unit 4, Social Issues, Vocabulary

Mayor = leader of a city

Governor = leader of a state

President = leader of the country

Making progress = getting better at something

*I hope you are making progress with your English. 

Elect = to vote for a person to get a position

Re-elect = elect a second time

*term = time period a person can have a position

Ex. The President gets one term, which is four years.  Then, he/she can for re-election for a second term. 

*launched = started

*tax = money you have to pay for the government

Enthusiastically = shows enjoyment

*Mr. Nate talks about things from our countries enthusiastically; Mr. Nate talks about food enthusiastically

Candidate = the person who wants a position

*This year, the two candidates for President are Donald Trump and now Kamala Harris

As usual = the normal; typical way

*You are late for class, as usual. 

Vote for = to choose someone for a position in an election

To vow = to make a big promise

Expand = make bigger or longer

*We should expand ELS days so that you guys are here until 5.  No we shouldn’t. 

Raise taxes = make people pay more taxes

Corporation = a big business

Citizens = people who belong to a country

Clear choice = 100% should choose this one

Ex. I study enthusiastically/I work out at the gym enthusiastically. 

*Do you plan to launch your own business or company?

*What is something you vow to do? 

*What are you making progress with?

*What would you like to be a candidate for?
