Cady and her parents are on vacation when they get into a terrible car accident that kills her mother and father and leaves Cady badly wounded. Her Aunt Gemma works for the FUNKI toy company, and she has come up with a new AI generated toy she calls M3GAN. At first, M3GAN blows up when she tries to do a demonstration with her boss David.
Aunt Gemma gets a call from the hospital, and now she must take care of Cady. She tries her best to be a good guardian, but she is not a parent and has no experience doing this. She is also very focused on her career and often doesn't have time to take care of a child.
When Cady, however, sees one of Gemma's robot inventions, Bruce, she says she would be happy if she had a toy like this. So, Gemma decides to go back to work on M3GAN and make her better this time. Once M3GAN is completed, she introduces the robot to Cady and to her boss, who now loves it and wants them to try and sell it.
